Whale Wisdom

By Michele Rae

It was late February 2020. I was on the beach one afternoon immersed in my Qigong practice and I saw a humpback whale emerge nose up about 100 feet off the shore in front of me! She submerged and came up again moving parallel to the shore. Our eyes met. The connection was so visceral I began to tear up. I felt an exchange and shared experience in the Infinite Sea of Consciousness.

Before my break to walk on the beach and practice Qigong, I was grading final papers in a class I teach “Mind-Body Science and Art of Transformation” in the Integrative Health and Wellbeing Coaching Program through the University of Minnesota’s Center for Spirituality and Healing. Each student picks one transformative practice to experience and learn about during our course. Their papers often include their physical, emotional and mental suffering and the positive impact their practice has on their inner and outer experience.

During my Qigong practice, I found myself breathing out to release and heal all distress and breathing in wholeness, light and love. I found myself in synch with the crashing waves on sand (there is a 900 foot drop off close to shore) a few feet in front of me.

As my practice continued, I began to feel into the level of consciousness I refer to as “I am Infinite.” It is a felt sense of unity with ALL THAT IS. For more information, see my book Living From the Center Within: Co-Creating Who You Are Becoming.

I have recently become intrigued with neutrinos. They are subatomic particle that are very similar to an electron, has no electrical charge and a very small mass, and are one of the most abundant particles in the universe. They come straight through the earth at nearly the speed of light, all the time, day and night, in enormous numbers. About 100 trillion neutrinos pass through our bodies every second. I was “in conversation” with neutrinos as my practice was finishing up. What do they have to teach us? Are they part of the non-local mechanism of sharing awareness in multiple dimensions of reality?

Enter one glorious humpback whale!

After the whale and I connected, I waited for a few more minutes but did not see sign of her. I began my walk along the beach back towards our resort. She came to the surface and waved her fin with a baby rolling to the surface beside her. I literally waved back! I continued the conversation inside with her as well. As I strolled along, they moved with me, frequently coming arching out of the water. At times she was blowing breath out of her blow hole, at times waving with her fin, often making eye contact. I was alone on the beach. There was a small crowd gathering near the resort beach ahead a half mile or so that had spotted them too.

As I continue walking towards the resort, the whales were so close to shore I could see a ring of bubbles rise, indicating the baby was feeding This happened three times over the course of our half hour encounter. During my visit here to Cabo San Lucas, I have learned that mother whales are nudged by their babies to stimulate an ejection of milk into the water near the baby’s mouth for feeding. Another whale joined the two for the last part of this amazing adventure and there was more playing.

As our time together was coming to an end, the family swam out further into the ocean. The adults raised their tails several times, seeming to say goodbye. I feel a deep sense of peace, gratitude, awe and wonder.

Thank you,
